Timber Flooring and Choosing the Right Finish

Timber flooring will just look like any other flooring technique without preserving the beauty of the hardwood via its appropriate finishes. Without the proper finish, the floor would easily look dull, get dirty, and prone to early wear and tear. Thus, it is very important that you make a good decision with the available finish selections.

There are different types of finishes such as the oil-based finishes, water-based finishes, solvent-based polyurethane, and composite finishes. Finishes are important in choosing your timber flooring because the surface would depend on what room you would install it in and for what the room is used for.

Choosing the right finishes would also lengthen the durability of the flooring. It could also change the color of the floor in time. Oil-based finishes are produced between a reaction with the oils linseed and tung with other chemicals used. The color of the finished wood would darken in time as the oil seeps through the wood internally. This also adds value in items like antique furniture and the like.  Water-based finishes such as polyurethane/acrylic finishes are usually applied on sealers. This finish enhances the color of the timber but the color of the timber will not really darken. The smooth, laminated surface allows dust and other debris to be easily  cleaned up. Solvent-based polyurethanes on the other hand produce a hard finish. Quite similar to the oil-based treatments, they darken as they age. Grains, pores and other main hardwood factors manifest accordingly in such stain. Composite finishes are composed of oil-based alkyds with added urethanes this makes the finish stronger to resist abrasions.
This kind of finish needs less maintenance and the color tend to darken over time.

Given all the timber flooring finish choices, you can now clearly decide for yourself which ones to choose. Because after all, in the end, the decision is always yours to make.
